Problem with Activation on Windows 2012 Server After domain controller is installed

Dear All ,

I faced an issue lately with windows 2012 server . I used windows 2012 Standard Evaluation edition for my Failover cluster setup . Had one active directory server and two nodes with windows 2012 Standard evaluation edition . Completed the failover cluster setup and the setup was online .

Now needed to activate the servers , successfully activated the nodes but I started getting error while activating the Active Directory Server .

” changing the windows edition is not supported online for a domain controller” .

So just an update for others , when you want to install Active directory on windows 2012  Evaluation version , activate the license first and then Install Active directory otherwise you wont be able to activate the license After Active directory is Installed  :)

So here goes the fix

1) First of all try to contact Microsoft Support and see if you can Activate the windows OS using the other option “Activate by Phone” , the Activate by phone option is Avaliable only if the Evaluation period has not expired .

2)  Create a VM and Install Active Directory on that server , while Installing Active Directory select existing forest and Add a domain controller to an existing forest , complete the installation . Let replication occur between the actual domain controller and the additional domain controller .

Now transfer the FSMO roles from Primary domain controller to additional domain controller using the following steps

Register Schmmgmt.dll

1) Click Start, and then click Run.
2) Type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll in the Open box, and then click OK.
3) Click OK when you receive the message that the operation succeeded.

Transfer the Schema Master Role

1) Click Start, click Run, type mmc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2) On the File, menu click Add/Remove Snap-in.
3) Click Add.
4) Click Active Directory Schema, click Add, click Close, and then click OK.
5) In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Change Domain Controller.
6) Click Specify Name, type the name of the domain controller that will be the new role holder, and then click OK.
7) In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Operations Master.
8) Click Change.
9) Click OK to confirm that you want to transfer the role, and then click Close.

Transfer the Domain Naming Master Role

1) Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Domains and Trusts.
2) Right-click Active Directory Domains and Trusts, and then click Connect to Domain Controller.
3) Click Change.
4) Click OK to confirm that you want to transfer the role, and then click Close.

Transfer the RID Master, PDC Emulator, and Infrastructure Master Roles

1) Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
2) Right-click Active Directory Users and Computers, and then click Connect to Domain Controller.
3) In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Users and Computers, point to All Tasks, and then click Operations Master.
4) Click the appropriate tab for the role that you want to transfer (RID, PDC, or Infrastructure), and then click Change.
5) Click OK to confirm that you want to transfer the role, and then click Close.

Once the FSMO roles are transferred , you can format the Active directory server for which you were not able to Activate the license . Now this time Activate the Server as soon as you format :) .

Install Active directory select existing forest and Add a domain controller to an existing forest and repeat the above steps . Once FSMO roles are transferred on this , test the failover by shutting down the VM and you are done . :)
